The Scandinavian grind

One of the defining characteristics of a traditional Mora knife is its Scandinavian grind, often called a Scandi grind.

The bevel runs from the edge toward the thicker part of the blade, creating a strong and practical cutting edge. It is particularly well suited to woodworking, carving and general outdoor tasks.

Another advantage is maintenance. A Scandi grind gives you a clear bevel to place against a sharpening stone, making it relatively straightforward to maintain a sharp edge without complicated sharpening equipment or guides.

Mora knives are supplied very sharp from the factory, but like any working knife, they will eventually need sharpening. The simple blade geometry makes routine edge maintenance easy to learn.

Carbon steel or stainless steel?

Mora knives are available with both carbon steel and stainless steel blades, and each has its advantages.

Mora carbon steel knives

Carbon steel is a traditional choice for Scandinavian knives. It can take an excellent edge and is particularly appreciated by people who do a lot of carving or woodworking.

The trade-off is that carbon steel needs more care. Moisture can cause corrosion, so the blade should be dried after use and protected when stored.

Some Mora knives use laminated carbon steel, combining a hard carbon-steel core with tougher steel on the outside. This construction provides a combination of edge performance and durability that has long been associated with Scandinavian knife making.

Mora stainless steel knives

Stainless steel is a practical choice when a knife will regularly be exposed to moisture.

Mora has traditionally used Swedish stainless steels such as Sandvik 12C27, valued for its combination of edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance.

For fishing, boating, wet outdoor conditions or use around salt water, a stainless Mora knife can be an especially sensible choice.

Mora knives for outdoor use, carving and hunting

A Mora knife is a remarkably versatile fixed-blade knife.

Different Mora models are designed for different kinds of work. Some are compact and practical for everyday outdoor tasks, while others are designed specifically for wood carving, fishing, bushcraft and hunting.

For carving and woodworking, the sharp Scandi edge and comfortable handle make Mora knives particularly popular. For general outdoor use, their lightweight construction makes them easy to carry without sacrificing useful blade length.

Choosing a Mora knife for hunting

A traditional Scandinavian knife does not necessarily have a large finger guard. For many general cutting tasks, this simple handle design works extremely well and gives the user considerable freedom in how the knife is held.

Hunting is different. When processing game, hands and handles can become wet and slippery. A finger guard can provide an additional measure of protection against the hand sliding forward onto the blade.

For hunting and game processing, consider a Mora model with a more pronounced finger guard and a handle designed for a secure grip.

Why choose Mora knives?

Mora knives have earned their reputation through practical use rather than elaborate styling. They are:

Made in Sweden

Designed around practical Scandinavian knife traditions

Available in carbon and stainless steel

Known for their sharp Scandi grind

Easy to maintain and sharpen

Available for carving, fishing, hunting and general outdoor use

Offered at an excellent price for a Swedish-made knife

For generations, Mora knives have demonstrated that a good working knife does not need to be complicated. A well-designed blade, a secure handle and a practical sheath can be enough to make a knife a trusted tool for years.
