Good But Not Great

Having a sub-collection of puukko mushroom knives among my many other puukkos, I grabbed this one as soon as Redbeard got it. It wreaks of quality materials & construction.
The thin but rigid Lauri SS blade, which actually measures 55 mm, is shaped for shrooms & is extremely sharp. It extends from a thick 3-mm brass guard capping spruce burl handle ending in a matte black ebony wood pommel. From it emerge 3 1-in bunches of somewhat-too-soft natural bristles. Without them, total handle length is 4 5/8 in, its circumference 4 1/8 at thickest. Not a "true" puukko, as the handle is comprised of 2 separate scales with black vulcanized rubber between. Unknown how far tang extends into it. Not of traditional puukko style, the sheath, while well constructed & molded to hold the knife sufficiently tight, is a study in overkill--far too large & heavy for this relatively small, lightweight tool. I'll use the paracord for a hat chin strap because the knife + sheath weighs over 1/4 lb, rendering it too clunky to wear around neck. Better to wear at waist, where it'll fit
a belt < 2-in wide. Overall, I like not love this piece, but am glad I bought it. At $189.99, it is 2X some similar mushroom puukos in my collection.

Description

John Jacobson jumped into the knife making hobby over 5 years ago now, After looking at his first shipment of knives, I would have thought he has been doing it for a lifetime. We love the fact that many of the handle materials that he uses are sustainably harvested out of the Boreal forest in Northern Minnesota. This is where his name comes from. All of his knives that we have seen have a very clean fit/finish and are ready to be used by anyone.

This one started out with the well known Lauri 58mm Mushroom blade that is Stainless Steel and just over 2" long. The handle is made out of Spruce Burl, Vulcanized Fiber, and Ebony wood pommel. This one has a natural bristle brush.

The Sheath is hand stitched and hand dyed and wet formed to fit the knife perfectly as any puukko should. The sheath is designed so it can be zip tied to the handle of a foragers basket but can also be worn as a neck knife using the included Paracord.

Quite a neat, well put together piece
