This blade is the perfect one for your first try. I've been wanting to make a custom handle for some time to see if I could do it. The worry is is you buy something and then you realize you don't know what you're doing and waste your money. With this one if you screw up you haven't broke the bank but if you get it right you've got something you can enjoy for a long time. I'm pretty happy with my first attempt. I also appreciate that Red Beard with Ragweed Forge has been answering all my different questions about different blades for almost a year before I ever purchased one.
