The Järvenpää Classic Utility Knife is a revival of an old classic. This knife would have been at home on the belt of a farmer or forester. It has a nicely minimalist look, and is about all the knife anyone really needs.
The blade is made of carbon steel. The sides are left black for a rustic look. The tang extends the full length of the handle. The handle is curly birch, with a girth suitable for average or slightly larger hands. The traditional leather sheath hangs from a twisted thong, and can be used for either left or right handed carry.
The Hare Knife shares its 8 cm black carbon steel blade with the Juhlavuolu, Aito, and Duck Knives. Its round-shaped handle makes it easy to rotate in hand for precise control in different positions.
The name was chosen simply to distinguish the knife from other models – it does not mean that the knife is only suitable for handling hares. The same is true for the Duck Knife. The main difference between them lies in the handle: while the Duck Knife's handle design features a finger guard, the Hare Knife’s handle does not.
The handle of the Hare Knife is made of oiled curly birch, with a lower bolster crafted from nickel silver. The sheath, available in either dark or light brown domestic vegetable-tanned leather, is adorned with hand-pressed decorative stripes.
The Hare Knife is a great general purpose knife without embellishments. It is suitable for hunters, outdoorsmen, hikers, and woodworkers. The carbon steel blade requires some care – after each use, it should be cleaned and dried thoroughly. The best way to protect the blade from corrosion is to apply a thin layer of oil. After use, we recommend leaving the knife out of its sheath for a day or two to allow both the blade and sheath to dry properly. Before leaving the factory, we protect the blades with CRC Sisu protective oil, which has a tar-like scent. WD-40 and CRC 5-56 work just as well.
If you use the knife to handle food, it’s best to protect the blade with cooking oil, such as sunflower oil. However, cooking oil is not recommended for long-term storage, as it can become sticky over time.
