Mora Carving #122 Original laminated Steel

Really a nice large butcher type blade like used here in Appalachia for smokehouse work on salt cured meat. It's thin enough, razor sharp and plenty stiff. About the right size for a backwoods knife, but not a machete.

This knife has everything great. Really good, sharp steel, absolutely outstanding wood and as well made a sheath as I've seen. In addition, great service from Redbeard and his team at Ragweed. The package came quickly and was well packaged. I liked this knife so much that I bought two more Boreal knives from Ragweed!

Got the brass version. Exactly as pictured, heavy enough to work as pendant even if it's partly hollow. Note the wire hole is relatively small; based on an eyeball estimate maybe 1,5mm wide.

I have been collecting and using knives for nearly 60 years, but just recently purchased my first Mora, one for me, one for my wife. The 511 is definitely basic, but it is all the knife a normal person needs. It came sharp and fits snugly in the black sheath. As always, I touched up the blades and they reached extreme sharp. The steel felt and acted very well treated and I have no doubt it will hold an edge very well. The handle is comfortable for both of us. Considering the price, we will not hold back on using these knives for all our needs. To date we have used them in the kitchen and in processing freshly harvested fatwood. They perform flawlessly. We reworked the spine to improve the scraping ability for wood fluff and fire steel, though we have never used a knife spine for those purposes. The knives appear indestructible, though I have no intention of testing that. Excellent knives, excellent price, excellent seller.

Will sand the black off before putting scales on. A very handy size. There is a subtle angle of the handle to blade.

I am an engineer. My favorite definition of engineering is, "The ART of executing a practical application of scientific knowledge." I am usually impressed with molded plastic, Kydex, or leather sheaths when I take time to carefully examine them and note their features, fit, and finish. Yet this one is definitely near the top of the scale. It is beautifully cut and molded, and edges are finished, with no apparent glitches anywhere. Plus the design is clean and neat, with even an adjustment bolt to change the sheath opening to suit your preference. Of course, Redbeard always deals in quality, so it makes sense. This is a very simple, practical, creative sheath, and I was as impressed with it as I expected to be. 👍

Very impressive hand axe. Generous axe head, well designed and a bit larger than expected. The treatment of the bottom of the handle was a pleasant surprise. Whatever that black coating is works very well. The texture makes for a very secure grip.

The knife is beautiful and fits in my large hands securely. The contouring on the front and back of the handle makes for a secure and comfortable grip in different positions. I prefer it to my Eggen for this reason. The blade came razed sharp out of the box. My only complaint is the sheath. I don’t like the appoint. Which looks juvenile and gimmicky to me. But that’s just aesthetics. My real problem with the sheath is the poor fitment of a plastic insert. Ir does not sit flush with the side of the sheath like in my other Helle sheaths and tends to catch on the blade when I put the knife back in the holster. The knife draws easily enough and is very secure in the sheath, but I have to carefully a lie in the knife to put it back in. I think this is a quality control rather than a design issue.

5/5 for the knife. 2/5 for the sheath.

This is one beautiful knife. The workmanship on the birch bark handle is exceptional. The handle is also practical. It fits my large hand perfectly and it feels secure. I am not concerned about it slipping. The sheath is also great, well-made and a nice belt loop. Ragweed customer service is super too. Redbeard is very knowledgeable and gives good advice.
