John Drewes has been a long time customer. Sending us photos of his custom knives every now and then, we have started to urge him to let us sell some. We often display his work on our Social Media Pages. After asking a number of time, he is ready to sell some of these beautiful pieces. Quite the creative craftsman with just beautiful hand finished work.
Number 17– Wizard's Puukko
The blade for this knife is a Lauri 95 heavy duty with hammered finish. The handle is Masur birch and two pieces of genuine reindeer antler. The black accent pieces are micarta and vulcanized spacer material.
According to an ancient legend, this knife, when shaken, will rattle, and this gentle noise will ward off evil spirits, gremlins, trolls, etc., that might otherwise bother you when alone in the forest. The holes in the distal part of the handle lead to a hollow chamber which contains small, loose, pieces of metal. According to the legend, pieces of a witch's tooth should be used for this, but I found it easier to use metal. It rattles gently.
The sheath here is of a very special construction. The lower part is a goat's horn that is the exact size for this blade. The horn was reshaped a bit by placing the open end in boiling water for a bit and then clamping it between two pieces of wood for a week or so to make it a bit narrower and fit just right. This procedure worked just fine. The upper part of the sheath is veg. tanned steer hide that is hand stitched and tooled. This ended up being a long time in construction, but I think it was an interesting and unique project.
Just a beautiful hand crafted piece, We truly love his work. Smooth and clean as always.
