John Drewes has been a long time customer. Sending us photos of his custom knives every now and then, we have started to urge him to let us sell some. We often display his work on our Social Media Pages. After asking a number of time, he is ready to sell some of these beautiful pieces. Quite the creative craftsman with just beautiful hand finished work.
Number 18
This is an unusual puukko style knife and sheath with a Lauri 95 HD rhombic blade and a handle of buckthorn wood with a piece of (glow in the dark) Kirinite acrylic. The black accent pieces are micarta and vulcanized spacer material. The ferrule and butt plate are stone washed nickel silver. The tang goes all the way through the handle. A quick charge under a strong light really really sets the Kirinite aglow!
The sheath is made of veg. tanned steer hide and has a shaped wood liner inside the lower part which provides for the deeper tooling and relief seen in this part. It is hand stitched. A small, hard, shaped piece of raw hide was used to reinforce the attachment area for the O-ring.
Although the lower part of the sheath looks rather symmetrical, the knife must be inserted with the cutting edge oriented correctly. This is important. A small arrow on the back side of the sheath served .as a reminder of the correct orientation for the cutting edge when inserting the knife. The handle cross section is not an oval, but is rather egg-shaped, with the narrow part of the egg corresponding to the cutting edge. The mouth of the sheath is also egg-shaped. Forceful, incorrect insertion of the knife will severely damage the sheath. Be mindful of this at all times.
