Description
John Drewes has been a long time customer. Sending us photos of his custom knives every now and then, we have started to urge him to let us sell some. We often display his work on our Social Media Pages. After asking a number of time, he is ready to sell some of these beautiful pieces. Quite the creative craftsman with just beautiful hand finished work.
No. 13 is a futuristic version of the age-old hat sheath knife (Hattutuppipuukko). The blade is a Lauri 95 rhombic HD. The knife handle is differentially dyed masur birch, and accent pieces are of micarta and fiber spacer material. Stone washed nickel-silver ferrule and pommel plate were also used here. The tang runs all the way through and is capped with a rivet.
The sheath is made of Finnish veg. tanned steer hide. The bottom part of the main body of the sheath has a wooden liner that was carved and shaped to enhance the designs that were tooled and compressed into the leather surface. When closed, the "hat" and the main body of the sheath totally enclose the knife. A four-strand braided leather cord connects the two parts and serves as an attachment cord.
To remove the knife from the sheath, first pull out about an inch or two of cord on either side of the sheath as shown in the photo showing the back side of the sheath. Remove the "hat" and slide the knife out carefully.
To re-insert the knife, orient the blade's cutting edge correctly and slide it carefully into the sheath and replace the "hat." Pull cord on both sides upward until the slack is gone. A small arrow on the back side of the sheath is a reminder of the direction the cutting edge must be oriented for correct insertion. Reversing this direction of the cutting edge will cause damage to the sheath if knife is forced in incorrectly. Be aware of this! Don't insert knife with cutting edge oriented the wrong way.
Just another beautiful hand crafted piece, We truly love his work.
